As a Website Designer and Developer and professional SEO specialist for start-ups and small businesses, this is my pet peeve question. I designed and developed a website for a homemade Pie company that wanted to sell their famous pies and cookies on-line.
After launching the site, the owner wanted to know how to get found of the World Wide Web. I offered him an SEO package for a low monthly rate ($125.00). I put him on Google Maps, and I did keyword research, off-page optimization, and started getting good backlinks. He was climbing up the pages, and he was getting hits!
2nd Invoice Sent
When I sent the month #2 billing invoice, he told me he wasn’t going to pay it because he was not making big sales on the Internet! I asked if he had advertised anywhere, and he said no, that is what the website is supposed to be doing.
First, I told him it takes more than 30 days to get things needed to rank high on major search engines. I recommended Google Ads, Social Media Marketing, etc. but he said he didn’t want to spend money on costly advertising. Wow!
My take on having a website on the World Wide Web is no different than the Yellow Pages of years ago if you wanted to get more clients and be seen you paid for a Display Ad. If you couldn’t afford the display ad, you spent a couple of dollars a month to have your business name bolded.
Some ranking facts.
Not all websites are going to Rank on the first page overnight. In fact, from a recent study, it may take 6-9 months (people paid monthly for those Yellow Page display ads for 12-months. Not every visitor is going to purchase your product if the product is not presented accurately on your website.
Even though you have a website, you still may need to use old school marketing or current Google Ads. Remember, once your site is on the first page with people using different keywords to search and find your business, then you can lower your Advertisement costs.
